What happened in Turkish football today? 17.05.2017
Fenerbahce and Basaksehirspor has shown top football at Turkish Cup semi-final 2nd leg game.
Turkish Cup semi-final 2nd leg game between Fenerbahce and Basaksehirspor would be remembered as one of the most exciting games at the competition history especially during recent years. Basaksehirspor has managed to get to the final with 9:10 penalties after aggregate score has been as 4:4 after extra time.
Basaksehirspor with today's result carries on with good chances at ending season with double as it would be competing at the Turkish Cup final against Konyaspor and is 2 points behind league leaders Besiktas with 3 games left at the season. This by itself shows that Basaksehirspor is having a great and memorable season. It has provided a reasonable good game during today's game creating high number of the chances even through it has trouble at stopping Fenerbahce to do the same. Most important thing for Basaksehirspor is that it has kept fighting spirit which their would need certainly for Super League 32nd game against Trabzonspor on 21st May. Meanwhile, interesting aspect of today's game has been for goals to come from ex-Fenerbahce players Holmen and Emre Belozoglu.
On other side, Fenerbahce has ended season with 3 weeks left at the Super League as it will not end season with Turkish Cup, which is known was a very important aim for the team as it was aiming to win a cup after such a poor season. It does need to be stated through that team did provide a good fighting spirit and gave their all but did lose through being unlucky at the penalties. Coming to the penalties, in total there were 25 penalty shots taken which included from goalkeepers who both had conceded. It did look like game will never end as how both sides were scoring (or missing) during penalty kicks and it became clear that the one who would be lucky would get a win. Great game which would also keep football at the top level.
Some readers, Turkish football followers and especially Turkish media would feel dissapointed that there is no big team at the Turkish Cup final, especially official broadcaster, but the game would be expected to be at the high quality at the final. Both teams are showing good football and even through would be seen as mediocre teams, their both capable to show top football. Another question is of course would Basaksehirspor would get trouble at the end of season?
Konyaspor has full control at the Turkish Cup semi-final game against Kasimpasa.
Konyaspor has become 1st finalist of the Turkish Cup 2016-17 season after beating Kasimpasa with 2:0 scoreline following 2nd leg and hence finishing semi-final tie with 4:3 aggregate. It was expected them to win game as their had played at home and as expected recieved strong support from fans.
Compare to previous season, Konyaspor didnt manage to provide similar performance and has been affected heavily by the Europa League group stage earlier this season. Despite of general poor season, it did provide a good performance at the Turkish Cup with setting an aim to get to the final and possibly winning it. It has shown very organised game and in fact has been at the top of the
Kasimpasa which compare to previous games, as it shown improving football, didnt manage to provide enough resistance both at the back and front against Konyaspor. Stating that the well organised game of Konyaspor has played an important game. The key of course of Konyaspor getting to final been great performance of Riad Bajic who has scored 2 goals during game and also general performance showing that he is one of the best players at the team.
Right now Konyaspor would meet with Basaksehirspor at the Turkish Cup final and would do its best to win the tournament this season. With the team getting 1st time to the final at this competition it can show top performance and winning is not as tough as it looks indeed.
Kerim Demirbay has chosen German National Team.
Hoffenheim player Kerim Derimbay, Turkish expat in Germany with both nationalities, had been chosen Germany National Team after stating several times that he wants to play for Turkey.
Interestingly, Turkish Football Federation has made statement and showing document where Kerim Derimbay has asked FIFA to allow him to compete for Turkish National Team which has been dated back on 15th May. In fact, both club and German Football Federation were aware of this letter.
However, after 2 hours when TFF has stated that Kerim Demirbay is expected to be selected to the squad for World Cup Qualifier game against Kosovo to be played on June, Germany National Team had announced that Demirbay is selected to the Germany squad for Confideration Cup 2017 which would take place in Russia. This brought some confusion especially when Kerim Demirbay has stated that he is proud to play for Germany. There is rumours that Germany National Team head coach Joachim Low has called Demirbay for most time of the yesterday trying to convince him. Turkish National Team has done for long time now to try to convince number of Turkish-origin German players to play for them, including Mesut Ozil, but some didnt choose it and some did. What is dissapointing here, is that Kerim Demirbay has changed his mind in such short notice.
Again, those players have mix feelings as some of them feel closer to Turkey due of their origin, while others feel more comfortable as their developed their football skills and lived entire life in Germany. Both decisions should be respected, but changing mind in short-notice is especially saddening.
