What happened in Turkish football today? 20.04.2017

Thank You, Besiktas!

Both teams during Europa League quarter-final 2nd leg game between Besiktas and Olympique Lyon has shown an incredible fighting spirit with Besiktas especially showing a great performance during 120 minutes and penalties with strong support from Besiktas fans.

It would not be overexerating if following game would been one of the best games, if not the best, of whole 2016/17 season as both teams has given all their best to win this game. As it is remembered, prior to this game both sides has stated that its time to focus about game and forget about issues outside of the field and both sides just shown that. Except of some number of defensive mistakes during 2nd half, which did lead to 1:1 scoreline it needs to be stated that all of the Besiktas players has shown great game and fighting spirit to win today's game and get into history of the team. It is saddened to see that the team which has given all their best to win the game has been eliminated from competition, but it is certain that Besiktas head coach Senol Gunes, administrative board, supporters and even more importantly, at the time of division in Turkish society, whole Turkey has been behind Besiktas hoping hoping Besiktas would get to semi-final against their French opponents.

In all fairness and looking things in balance way, it needs to be stated that if Olympique Lyon has been eliminated it would been unfair for them. In similar manner as Besiktas their had given all their best and been just more luckier in penalties. But again located in Turkey and follower of Turkish football we wished for Besiktas to get through.

Besiktas has given us memorable night during today's game and did show that one day it can win Europa League, and that could be next year or even better it can get to the play-off of Champions League.

Both Besiktas and Lyon has recieved 1 year ban in case if hooliganism action will be repeated within 2 years.

One of the most discussed and awaiting aspects of this week has been regarding of what kind of decision would UEFA make regarding of the fans disturbances prior to the Europa League quarter-final 1st leg game between Lyon and Besiktas. The following decisions announced yesterday didnt make Besiktas administrators happy at all.

UEFA has stated that both clubs would releasing 1 year ban in case if both clubs repeat following case within 2 years with the argument that Besiktas did repeat following action beforehand. Even through Lyon side seems to be happy with following decisions, stating that it would allow 2nd leg to be kept in calmer manner Besiktas administrators has stated that it is not unfair decision. However, it does need to be remembered that hooliganism behaviour has been led from Besiktas supporters according to data regardless where their sat. Unfortunately, Turkish and Besiktas supporters tend to show some negative behaviour during games as it lying down to emotional nature of the Turkish people. With this taking into account its pretty normal for Besiktas to feel worried about following decisions. I am aware that number of Besiktas and Turkish supporters might hate me for this, but taking account that decision has been given same to both side and events which happened in Lyon, I would state its fair decision.

Besiktas would complain this decision to UEFA on 21st April which their have right to do and does need to do to show their image but it is difficult case to be get a right decision for them indeed.

Galatasaray player Serdar Aziz wants his salary from Bursaspor to be given to youth academy.

It became clear today that Galatasaray player Serdar Aziz who was still waiting for 80,000 TL salary from his period from Bursaspor has changed his mind of recieving this salary as long as the money will be spend to Bursaspor youth academy.

It does need to be stated that following decision by Aziz is very generous and will not help for development of Bursaspor but Turkish football generally and even through this could be seen as small contribution, extra cash is always extra cash as long as Bursaspor would use this money as Serdar Aziz was intending it to be used. All of the use of this cash aimed on other investment, needless to say, would be done unfairly by Bursaspor even if money would be given to future transfer offers. Bursaspor being one of the key clubs and focussing into development of Turkish football would be likely through to use money as intended.

Serdar Aziz shown great generous actions of this and similar should be done by footballers in similar cases and should be seen as great example.
