What happened in Turkish football today? 14.04.2017

Besiktas has lost due of two simple mistakes during 74 second time span.

Europa League quarter-final 1st leg game between Olympique Lyon and Besiktas has been ended up being a very eventful game with both at the field and outside of the field. Coming to the actions at the stadium, we have been viewed a game of two halves where Besiktas has shown great superiority over Lyon.

In fact, as soon as kick-off whistle took place Besiktas has shown very organised football with high focus into game as we became used to see from them for whole of this season. It was given a view that Besiktas would at least end the game with the win or at least with draw. As Ryan Babel scored with a great pre-prepared tactic with Talisca it was even possible that their going to win the game. However, as game progressed and especially during 2nd half Besiktas performance has been reduced as team has playing more slowly and without concentration which led for Lyon to find 2 goals back-to-back in 74 seconds. 2nd goal has been scored by loss of concentration of Besiktas player Fabri who tried to control ball as last man rather than hitting as far as he can. With this 74 seconds Besiktas did put its chance to qualify even harder as it can now win at the home ground to get through.

Stating that Besiktas are capable of winnng the game at the Istanbul with the help of fans and general atmosphere which Vodafone Arena gives. This aspect could be main reason why Aulas demands for game to be played without fans.

Olympique Lyon wants to play 2nd leg game against Besiktas without fans.

The events which took place before Europa League quarter-final 1st leg game in Olympique Lyon and Besiktas, which led for game to be started 50 minutes later needs to be taken into full consideration as even through signs show that Besiktas fans were ones to started it, its hard to state who their represent.

Even through it is almost certain now that the sparklers has been through by Besiktas shirt fans, it is still unclear about identity of those people as their had been placed at the area where tickets were sold by Lyon administration. This factor alone means that Besiktas administration doesnt pay responsibility for this behaviour and are expecting for Lyon to get fines for all those actions, while Lyon CEO Aulas states that its been done by Turkish fans, some coming from Germany, and going to one step further that the game in Istanbul should be played without fans. Interestingly, Aulas has remembered suddenly the friendly game which was supposed to be played agaistt Fenerbahce in Istanbul on 16th July and how the team has been accompanied by tanks. Totally unrelated factor for next week game as Turkish stadiums has been able to host high number of games and there is no tanks pleasant anymore in Istanbul streets. Meanwhile, Lyon head coach Bruno Genesio on other hands stated that there is no reason at all not to go to Besiktas and play game with their supporters.

Olympique Lyon does provide an image sadly to get an advantage over Besiktas for 2nd leg using fans behaviour as an excuse. Again, those fans should be punished and so is who responsible (if needed even Besiktas administration) but playing 2nd leg without fans is totally out of question here.

Fenerbahce would keep both Volkan Demirel and Fabiano at the team for next season.

It has become clear that Fenerbahce plans to keep its both goalkeepers at the team in next season, as it plans to offer 1+2 year extension contract to its main goalkeeper Volkan Demirel and loan one more year Fabiano at the team.

There were talks at the Turkish media that Fenerbahce does consider to end contract with its player Volkan Demirel during this summer transfer window as he gets older as player, to which Demirel has stated that he would end his footballing career if that will be case. However, from start this rumour was seen to be unlucky and right now media states that team considers to extend contract with Demirel for 1+2 which does sound more reasonable. As Demirel has returned as main goalkeeper during Turkish Cup quarter-final 2nd leg game against Kayserispor after injury, he has shown very good preparation and readiness among professionalism. Decision to extend loan of Fabiano is also right decision as he proven to be good 2nd goalkeeper at the team.

Fenerbahce does have some issues at the squad but goalkeepers are not among them and it was right decision for them to keep both goalkeepers at the team.
