What happened in Turkish football today? 1.12.2016

Trabzonspor has recieved shock loss from Gumushanespor.

Compare to other big 4 teams importance of the Turkish Cup group stage 1st week games, is even more for Trabzonspor as it  needed most to win at this competition since it could find a way to get  a motivation from very poor performance at the Super League however it has carried on its bad performance at this tournament also.

Trabzonspor has come out to the game with pretty strong squad against 2nd league team Gumushanespor and was seen as strong as favourite and was expected to get a win to regain confidence for the Super League. The game in fact did start pretty good for Trabzonspor as it has found a goal on 24th minute by the Muhammet Demir and was seen to carry on controlling game at what is expected to be last game at the Avni Aker Stadium before it moves to Akyazi Stadium. However, it did concede goal after 5 minutes to younger brother of Hakan Calhanoglu, Gumushanespor player Muhammed Calhanoglu from the free kick. Trabzonspor as in previous league games has controlled ball more and has had more attacks compare to its opponent, but it had 20 shots off-target while 4 on target and this statistics by itself shows difficulty which team is going through right now at the front. Trabzonspor carries on showing worrying performance and again shows signs of problems at defence. It urgently needs on target transfers this midseason.

Gumushanespor has got a very important win at its history and more importantly has got a win against strongest team at the group which would be additional motivation for them to fight for last 16 spot. Its task would be hard but its achievable.

Trabzonspor carries on providing poor performance and with poor game at the Super League it was expected for them to give good performance at Turkish Cup but if it carries on like that it might not see last 16 spot.

Red card didnt allow Dick Advocaat to analyse his reserve and youth players against Genclerbirligi.

Red card which was recieved by Fenerbahce player Ismail Kolbasi during Turkish Cup 1st week game against Genclerbirligi at 10th minute has certainly has affected all the plans of Dick Advocaat for this game. Even through it was questionable if he wanted to win game with that squad but he lost chance to view youth players fully.

With the important derby game coming up on 3rd December against Besiktas, it was quite natural for Fenerbahce to start squad with players who mainly have consisted of youth and reserves even if it was against Super League team with full squad. It could been argued that with those squad it had arleady poor chance for Fenerbahce to get a win but head coach Dick Advocaat wanted to use this opportunity to look at his alternatives and future of his club. However, with Koybasi red card the game went into different style the game and it was hard for Advocaat to get full picture. Only positive factor is that Yigilthan Guveli has shown his goal-scoring skills at the game with the only goal by team which was scored by a header. Fenerbahce will not be dissapointed with the loss as this pretty easy group for them and also with focussing into Besiktas game.

Fenerbahce would now train and wait for crucial game against Besiktas at which it would aim for a win to reduce point different to one point with them. This game as been mentioned is more crucial for Fenerbahce.

Galatasaray has shown entirely different halves at the game against Elazigspor.

During Turkish Cup 1st week game against Elazigspor, Galatasaray had a very interesting game where it had played controlled game at 1st half but then allowed its opponents at the 2nd half to get full control despite of winning with minumum scoreline.

This decision by team players has certainly affected to the game, as Elazigspor at the last minute, without much have time for Galatasaray to solve this mistake, to score a goal and get a draw. Despite of result, the main point for this performance at 2nd half brought some worrying views which was also mentioned after game by head coach Jan Olde Riekerink after game that if team does same at the Super League it would have a big issues. It needs to be stated that is unclear in what ways does Galatasaray takes Turkish Cup as an priority but there been statements that it would aim to defend its title. Its hardly to say for now, as big 4 teams seems to qualify from group stage to knockout with ease, even with poor performance due of quality players but this performance at knockout stage would certainly raise issues to the team.

But as again Turkish Cup performance by big Istanbul clubs should be treated separately due of level of teams at the competition and generally due of different priorities. Its just important do not carry on this performance against Kasimpasa at this weekend in the Super League on 4th December.
