What happened in Turkish football today? 11/09/2020

Fenerbahce has won in the opening game of new season.

Fenerbahce player Jose Sosa penalty goal on 89th minute has led for his side to start season with win without providing specifically very good performance as it struggled to get high tempo of the game against Rizespor.

With Fenerbahce making high number of pretty quality transfers during this summer transfer window, it needs to be noted number of players which are expected to be regular at starting 11 didnt start game with coming out either on 2nd half or staying in the substitution. With this being case for side, it needs to be noted that this could be reason why Fenerbahce failed to provide full control of game during 1st half among this being also 1st game of the season. Stating that it needs to be admitted that despite of slow tempo of both sides on 1st half both teams didnt necessary provide poor performane with staying into their tasks and for most amount of the game didnt make high number of mistakes. In addition, Fenerbahce did provide some promising views with trying to show some creative game and did show signs of looking for chances as game progressed. It needs to be noted that Fenerbahce 2nd penalty did provide some uncertainty and protest from Rizespor but it is clear that Sosa been prevented to go forward.

Rizespor on their part did provide high level concentration with most part of game providing higher possession of the ball compare to opponent and found great goal with Skoda. Despite of loss, it needs to be noted that Rizespor provided good start of the season in performance and does provide some positive signs.

Fenerbahce even through did struggle to get full control of the game still got important win and started season with good motivational and confidence for upcoming season.

Galatasaray can have some issues due of lack of midfielders on squad.

Galatasaray are going to start new 2020-21 Super League season with surprising side of previous season Gaziantep as it would be willing to provide much better performance which it did during previous season.

It needs to be reminded that Galatasaray poor start and ending of previous season has led for them to end season way below its aims and hence would be aiming to show much more effective start of the season. Even through it does have some good players at its squad especially in the front however it didnt solve its midfielding issue during this summer transfer window for now which could provide some issues with Gaziantep who does show strong and effective attacking performance. Still, Gaziantep despite of showing strong performance in previous season in general, it didnt provide great games against big 4 sides and for sure it would be focussed to solve this issue with this openning week as both sides would be looking for good start.

Galatasaray are coming out as favourites but it does look like absences at the midfielding position could make some issues for side.

There is risk that Covid could affect development of this league.

As TFF CEO Nihat Ozdemir mentioned on his openning letter of starting of the 2020-21 season, this season could be difficult one not only to change of format but due of Covid 19 which could effect this season.

Without doubt, there is still risks of 2nd wave taking place as most scientists and virusologists predict that Covid19 would be continuing to be threat to wellbeing of population at least until Spring 2021. Therefore, there is posibility sadly that leagues could be stopped once again for some number of week as lockdown rules would be going on. In addition, even if league continues there is possibility with some games to be postponed due of possible vast spread among players in one particular side. What is important here, as Ozdemir mentioned himself, is to provide right reaction and do best to prevent virus to spread by TFF and football clubs both in football and general population.

It does look Covid19 could affect football community at least until 2021 but if everything get done right and also with some luck this season could be done entirely without Covid negatively affecting it.
