What happened in Turkish football today? 31/08/2020

Galatasaray could have tough game against Neftci.

Galatasaray has been drawn with Azerbaijan side Neftci Baku at Europa League 2nd qualifier as game would be taking place at Baku on 17th September as two of the Turkic nations would be meeting each other to get into next stage of tournament.

Before, here it is important to note that Azerbaijan is still being at strict quarantine rules due of Covid19, which been extended to 30th September mainly due of previous normalisation didnt go as planned and uncertainty of condition. However, government does allow expection to sporting event so it wont affect this game unless things would go out of hand. Coming to this tie itself, Galatasaray could be seen as favourite for this tie but as known Azeri, especially Qarabaq, but also Neftci are showing some signs of improvement even through slowly and hence would be expecting to provide some tough game for their opponent as Azeri side would be coming with confidence it can get through. Hence, Galatasaray needs to be stayed focussed if it doesnt want to have unwanted surprise during game.

Therefore, it could be seen good draw but its not specifically easy one so it would need to provide good game.

Covid19 threat to Turkish football still present.

Even through threat of putting Super League into lockdown doesnt seem to be at the question, situation of Turkey with Covid19 does provide some worries into society, or at least ones who are aware of seriousness of situation, and does also affect clubs and players psychology.

Even through initial fear of having some crucial circumstances from this virus is being reduced prior to initial issue, it is visible that clubs and players would not like to get infected as it would lead them to live side for 2-weeks and not having players. Also high number of cases within clubs, like Erzurumspor who has 4 confirmed active cases right now, could lead at best scenario not to play its some key players and worst hardly have players who would be able to come out to the game. Turkish National Team head coach Senol Gunes, emphasing that situation with cases is going up, stated that this training camp for Nations League games against Hungary and Serbia is going through with high control of focussing into health conditions to prevent some unwanted developments.

Hence, it does look like start of the season even through without lockdown for now, would be still dominated with Covid19.

Emre Akbaba is not expected to recover from injury until September.

It became clear that Galatasaray player Emre Akbaba who became injured during last game of previous season will not be able to return until October as he has been strongly suffered from injuries in his club.

With Emre Akbaba being fast player with always looking for chances to score goals and converting them among providing good crosses, his absence during first but pretty crucial games would provide some issues in attacking game both in sense of tempo and creativity. Therefore, Galatasaray would need to find some replacement in the attack for crucial games against Basaksehirspor, Fenerbahce on September if it wants to get results which it would be seeking for in the end of those games and get good start of the season.

It does look Galatasaray would feel absence of Akbaba at least until September and hence needs to find solutions.
