What happened in Turkish football today? 14/08/2018
Fenerbahce has shown great game but didnt manage to beat Benfica.
Fenerbahce has come out to the Champions League 3rd qualifying round 2nd leg game with an focus to win game and has played an attacking game but goal which was conceded during 26th minute has become turning point of the game.
It needs to be stated that tactically Fenerbahce head coach Phillip Cocu has prepared team in a manner to be able to turn around this tie game as team has lost 1:0 in Benfica during 1st leg game. It has provided one of their best games during last periods with statistics showing it but it needs to be done that Benfica after scoring goal with Fernandes and team has managed to play game for a scoreline and has done it in good manner and even through Fenerbahce has provided great balance between defence and attack, Benfica defence has managed to prevent Fenerbahce to create very strong chances. Another factor was for Fenerbahce giving strong focus towards game with showing strong and attacking game but tiredness has shown itself during 2nd half which hence led them to play much more faster but in same time having unsuccessful using its chances during 2nd half. Still, it needs to be stated that Fenerbahce has shown great game against Benfica and did deserve to get to play-off round.
Benfica didnt provide much attacks apart of scoring goal during 26th minute and has played game for scoreline with being careful at defence and also wasting time towards end when it got chance. Benfica played good tactical game but not much with attacking style.
Fenerbahce did show good performance but two goals conceded in this 2 game tie has cost them play-off ticket. Right now team would participate at Europa League and today game does provide high level of hope for this season as team does show improvement.
Besiktas would be having CEO election on 16th September.
Besiktas CEO Fikret Orman during last weekend administrative meeting has announced in pretty surprising manner that club would have new CEO election, with a date been selected as 16th September at the meeting between administratives on 13th August.
It is believed that Fikret Orman decision to go for early election is not mainly due of the internal crises at club but get once again support from members of the club and also an opportunity to change administrative team which he currently has due of some minor internal issues which club has and bring new faces surrounding him. In fact, it is reported that only 8 members of current administration from total of 16 would be at his team for 16th September election. Due of economical crises and also FFP regulations, Besiktas didnt have great transfer window even through it seems to be one which has made most amount of cash from players sold compare to other big 3 teams. It also would be accepted for Fikret Orman to run into election as solo candidate as not many people would believe that Orman doing bad job and would have self-belief to run against him.
Therefore, it is believed that this election would very highly keep Orman as CEO but would allow him to have different administrative team after election.
There are still some issues with VAR system after 1st week.
There has been recieved number of talks and criticism into VAR has been regulated during 1st week games and even through it needs to be acknowledged that its 1st week of the season and in overall system has been going well there were some issues.
It needs to be stated that number of decision which been made due of VAR, either by looking at videos or talking to VAR referees, main referee of the game has been made for most part right decisions. However, there were some areas which it didnt manage to do well and which it was behind from World Cup 2018 experience. Foremost, it was realised that communication between referee at stadium and VAR room didnt go in fast manner and lots of discussion has been made, a factor which could be solved in the time and with all referees getting used and adapted to situation. Meanwhile, during this conversation it was visible what was worried before start of the season, players has been discussed a lot with referees of the game and aiming to change decision. The only way how this could be solved is to provide yellow cards as it is been stated that players cant interfere during VAR conversation and videos.
Those are matters which should be solved at the time especially conversation while players pressuring referee should be prevented with guidelines given to referee such as providing yellow card.
Results:
UEFA Champions League, 3rd qualifying round, 2nd leg:
Spartak Moscow 0:0 PAOK (agg:2:3)(PAOK would be playing against Benfica during Champions League play-off round)
