What happened in Turkish football today? 18.11
Galatasaray termination of contract with Hamza Hamzaoglu is full of mysteries.
Turkish footballing world was going through normal working day until early evening all of the Turkish sports media offices didnt recieve news about Galatasaray ending contract with club head coach Hamza Hamzaoglu. As expected, this news has raised shock from everyone including within Galatasaray fans themselves.
Just after 7 pm, Turkish time at the Galatasaray website club has made press release that club has ended contract with Hamza Hamzaoglu. The reasons of the termination were not given at the release, however there is rumours that it is related to the comment which was made yesterday that he would extend contract with Umut Bulut even if it wasnt extended straight away according to contract.
As it was remembered, Galatasaray has started season poorly and below its potential and there were talks of ending contract with Hamzaoglu back then, but club decided to carry on with him. Compare to that performance, Galatasaray is playing much better football, has chance to qualify for Champions League last 16 stage and still inside Super League title race. With rise of performance by the team it is surprising and unclear why Hamzaoglu contract has ended.
Turkey should be successful at Euro 2016.
Turkish National Team has played its first two friendly games as a preparation to the Euro2016 tournament to France in a week. Turkey has managed to win Qatar with 2:1 while losing game in one point and having goalless draw against Greece yesterday. But more importantly it has ended 2015 without losing any game, having 7 wins and 3 draws.
As always, there is some parts of Turkish national team to be criticised and signs of improvement however you cant say that team didnt deserve to be in France, referring to last games in qualifiers. Turkish national team is known to perform better at the final tournament than in qualifiers so there is big expectations in team to succeed at European Championship.
Turkish head coach Fatih Terim has great squad at his hand currently and all those players will improve as season progresses. Biggest focus will be given to Arda Turan who after New Year will be able to play for Barcelona and hence get into his performance level and be much stronger in France next year.
Turkish supporters booing of Greek anthem and minute of silence is more than disrespect.
Yesterday's friendly game between Turkey and Greece, unfortunately, was mainly discussed about behaviour by the supporters by booing during 1-minute of silence given to the condelences of Paris attacks and also during Greek national anthem. This behaviour is totally unsuitable and raises very important question about Turkish society.
Firstly, it is important to note that this behaviour does not represent whole Turkish nation as it has shown some support of the Paris events and have good conditions with Greeks but only minority seems to show negative reaction. However, only this minority has damaged Turkish image in incredible negative way. Meanwhile, there is argument that this protest was given towards ISIS and terrorism in general, however unfortunately it doesnt look like that for Europe. After game Turkish head coach Fatih Terim have said that this reaction is incorrect and will be misunderstood by Europe and affect image of Turkey.
Even more worrying is negative reaction which it may rise towards Turkish national team in the Euro2016 at France next summer. In case if this incident will not be forgotten (and could easily not be) some fans might provide similar reaction when Turkish national team will be played at stadiums, especially if game will be against France. I am pretty sure noone in Turkey would like this to happen, but it might due of stupidity of minors at stadium during yesterday game.
