What happened in Turkish football today? 25/08/2020

PAOK defeated Besiktas with finding 3 goals on first 30 minutes.

Besiktas has been relegated from UEFA Champions League as it has lost to PAOK during 1 game 2nd qualifier game with 3:1 scoreline in empty stands in Greece, while conceding goals during 1st 30 minutes.

There were talks that Besiktas with losing some players on their squad and also due of playing single game has been seen as disadvantage for them as in European competitions Turkish clubs always good results at home ground with home supporters. It needs to be noted that this factor has become clear during first 30 minutes with conceding 3 goals back to back especially with conceding 2 goals from Tzolis who is being 18-year old player found his 1st goals for his club. Goal from Cyle Larin on 37th minute did provide some hope for 2nd half but it needs to be noted that Besiktas didnt raise tempo of the game into needed level while PAOK did provide controlled game with score advantage and looked to be side which did control whole game. Besiktas head coach Sergen Yalcin debut at European competition hasnt been great but it needs to be admitted he had limited squad.

As been noted, PAOK looked to be more prepared and with finding 3 fast goals were able to get scoreline which it seeked for and allowed them to control rest of the game and would now focus to 3rd qualifying round.

Besiktas start both in Europe and season has been pretty poor and didnt provide its expectations as it was expected to provide much more resistance and would now continue its European journey at Europa League 3rd qualifier.

30% of supporters would be allowed to stadium from October.

TFF has announced that 30% of capacity of stadiums would be allowed to be filled with supporters since October as situation with Covid 19 is getting slightly worser in Turkey, even through it is not in panicking mood for now.

Foremost, it is crucial to remind that rules which been set to prevent Covid-19 spreading both in Turkey and rest of the world would be going through, as everyone who would be entering to stadiums would be checked for temperature including supporters from October, social distancing would be going through and masks would be worn by everyone. It needs to be reminded that TFF CEO Nihat Ozdemir did mention that their been reluctant to introduce supporters during previous season when even administrators and substitutes didnt follow those rules. Therefore, both federation and clubs would need to provide information and to some extend educate its supporters how to follow those rules with making clear that if it wont follow it could bring back empty stands again. Denmark meanwhile does have 10% capacity and doesnt provide any fines to clubs regarding this issue, and hence should be used as role model.

In here, it is important to note that situation with Covid is still being unclear and conversation to return of lockdown is being active in rest of the world and very likely behind scenes in Turkey, and therefore this is plan which has many reasons to happen but due of situation can be scratched.

Positive tests among players continues to rise

Staying on the topic of Covid19, as been noted on previous blogs due of end of short summer break some players which are returning from holidays are been tested positive with Goztepe announcing 1 unnamed player while Erzurumspor newly-signed player Arturo Mina also got positive result.

Accoring to Erzurumspor announcement, Mina has got infection while being on holiday in Ecuador where he took following test. It is reported that plays is going to isolation and recovery in his home country meanwhile. Similar positive outcome in Goztepe is very likely to be case with player possibly being newly-signed player and our blog wishes fast recovery for both names. Even through expected, but pretty worrying raise of cases is being seen with possibly does provide some wrong behaviour from players and clubs to travel in summer resort areas in such period of time especially when this break is being short. It is understandable for players to want to rest, but it has led to such circumstances.

We are sadly seeing rise of cases of Covid in Turkish football community and if this continues like this it could provide some worrying issues both to clubs and TFF.
