What happened in Turkish football today? 31/07/2020

Basaksehirspor got deserved title after being close in recent seasons.

Starting for today and next 3 days of our blog we would be going through this unusual football season with going through how clubs have performed focussing into top 3 sides, other clubs who got European spots and also some review of promoted side. Hence, there is no relegation, automatically there wouldnt be focus on them in this end of season summaries.

Quite naturally, this review would be started with title winners Basaksehirspor who without doubt has got its first title in its short history but it needs to be admitted it did aim for such spot in recent years always being really close to it. There has been among arguments one of the main reason for them ending season as champions, was due of playing without supporters after Covid19 break. With taking account that side is used to play on such condition and is being one of the main reasons why it lost titles in last stages of season, it would be unfair to side to only connect reasons of this. With having strong organisational side and experienced players with young but hungry coach Okan Buruk did play important for this title without doubt at the end.

Right now, Basaksehirspor is being only side which didnt complete season and now would need to be focussing into 2nd leg of last 16 game against Copenhagen at Europa League on 5th August.

Trabzonspor had great season but still needs to improve.

Trabzonspor did provide one of the most strongest performance for last 9 seasons and did win Turkish Cup but it did lose its opportunity for title with mistakes during defence and not keeping leading scoring lose in this way 27 points.

When looking at whole season, it needs to be noted that this season it did provide up and down performance but with all clubs, especially during 1st half of the season, providing similar game has always kept themselves at top positions. Even through statistically it did provide similar results prior to Covid19 break, it needs to be noted that it did lose some tempo towards end of the season even through its been one of the most well-prepared sides during Covid19 break and did provide some signs of it after 1st games after break, but as season was concluding it did lose that tempo. Trabzonspor needs to be admitted did provide good performance compare to previous season but it still needs to improve on some things to win title for sure.

In addition, its been dissapointing for them after such good season to get ban from UEFA for 1 season but it needs to be noted that without following FFP rules it did pay its price.

Besiktas became better side after Sergen Yalcin been appointed

If for most of clubs to go through performance of this season needs to be going through as before Covid19 and after, with Besiktas it is more before and after Sergen Yalcin as side provided totally different performances.

Abdullah Avci tactical game was focussed into providing patient controllable more focussed defensive game which without doubt has worked with Basaksehirspor during last season but taking how squad structured with Besiktas it did push side backwards as it was more offensive side. Without doubt, Sergen Yalcin was more focussed into providing strong attacking game, with using needs to be admitted limited side into its maximum level which without doubt did help for side to end season at 3rd spot which is been best outcome he could be hoping for from side which has been seen not to end at Europa League before break. Even through role of other sides did play role here, Besiktas has been most side to collect points after break. Even through when looking at whole in fairness its hard to say that this side did deserved title when looking in last 8 games it been side on top.

Besiktas due of Trabzonspor ban, did get Champions League  qualifying spot it needs to find ways how to make team competitive in tournament with limited finances at hand.
