What happened in Turkish football today? 21/06/2021

Turkey ended tournament poorly as it played whole Euro2020.

Turkish National Team only option when coming to last week game against Switzealand at Group A has been to get either confident win for getting into better average or win at all and wait for point losses from potential 3rd spot. Among not achieving that, it continued poor performance once again.

It should be noted to some extend that Turkey did have good start of the game with providing its best game until it conceded on 7th minute from Halis Seferovic which led them to lose concentration. E ven through its been pleasant to see for Turkey to provide much more attacking game and at least show farewell with good game, this outcome could be seen as expected since it did lose all motivation and criticism should be given to whole tournament. Meanwhile, with Switzealand getting lead which been main priority for them did reduce tempo of the game and aiming not to let Turkey to show some attacking game even through Turkey did find goal with Irfan Can Kahveci which been only positive side from game and whole tournament. This been another dissapointing game and result for Turkey but this time when getting behind its been difficult to concentrate once again for sure.

Turkey didnt provide any top game during Euro2020 and it needs to go through and identify reasons for such outcome.

Why did Senol Gunes had such decline with his team at Euro 2020.

With providing very poor performance from start to an end at the Euro 2020 with both tactically and players performance as whole, its been natural to see that whole blame been given to head coach Senol Gunes with calls to sack him.

It needs to be reminded that Senol Gunes has been main reason how this side did find itself at the Euro 2020 with getting two wins against France and also wins against Holland and Norway more recently, so it should be questioned why such performance been provided at Euro 2020 and is it not form of Senol Gunes which been reason. Most important question is why same side which only recently got such good performances and results had such decline in how it performed with Senol Gunes both making mistakes with squad selection and tactically game, is it because there is decline with Gunes or something didnt go well at the place where most highest focus should be given during whole tournament. It does look like TFF would need to go through this reasons and discuss with Senol Gunes.

Regardless of future of Senol Gunes, everyone who been involved in this tournament from Turkey needs to identify and find solutions of issues which been pleasant.

Is poor pre-Euro 2020 preparation to blame for poor performance.

As it is known prior to important and European games among clubs and national side Turkish sports media community tends to overrate providing high level expectations which Turkey migh have difficulty to fullfill. However, this time most European media did expect much better performance from Turkey, so it did provide very poor performance.

As been noted above it would be every important for whole side, with everyone who get involved to identify issues, which could even lay to pre-tournament preparation as Senol Gunes did state that training session are happening in relaxed mode and friendlies were played with modest side, none being closer at Euro 2020 level. This decision been connected to difficult season which everyone went through, but maybe such relaxation has pushed side back when playing against sides which did show much more intense training sessions. Meanwhile, blaming to Covid19, which in all fairness is not been done by team even through clubs did that in previus season frequently, would be unrelated as every nation at tournament had uncertainty and later intense timetable due of pandemic and provided much better performance compare to Turkey.

With saying issue is likely to be more deeper, such relaxed preparation to such important tournament could paid negative impact to side without doubt.
