What happened in Turkish football today? 09/03/2022

Barcelona is being strong favourite despite of having not great season.

Galataasaray will be back to Europa League as it is going to meet European giant Barcelona which doesnt have very good season so far but still coming out as strong favourite without doubt.

In fact, even through poor season from Barcelona does provide some hope for Galatasaray supporters, it needs to be noted that performance and form wise Barcelona is in fact is in much better condition and even through for them this tournament could be seen degrading, it could be seeing saving its poor season with getting possible title of this tournament so it would be not right to state that Barcelona would take this game too lightly. There is one advantage of this game for Galatasaray, which is that its head coach Domenec Torrent  has worked with club as assistant coach and have some knowledge of the club and hence he would be able to know how to stop opponent and aware of its main weaknesses.

Hence, this would be tough game for Galatasaray and without doubt it should mostly focus to get scoreline which would keep their chances alive for 2nd leg.

Mete Kalkavan has resigned as referee.

Turkish referee Mete Kalkavan has resigned as referee despite of being in the list of referees for last 10 weeks, as it is expected that following decision is connected to Central Referee Committee list of referees available for last 10 weeks.

Without providing any reasons for such decisions, which are been awaited from Turkish sports community, TFF did announce that 13 referees will not be included for last 10 weeks which did rise strong reaction from Turkish football. Mete Kalkavan decision to resign, if and very likely connected to this, does provide strong protest also to Cental Referee Committee as such is unpredecedent and does provide damage in general to Turkish football. The factor that he is being selected for last 10 weeks by itself shows that this decision is being highly questionable.

There is expectation that some more referees could follow suit with showing strong reaction for this questionable decision from TFF.

Clubs believed to affect decision of not including some referees for last 10 weeks.

There is in fact strong belief that decision for not including some of the referees for last 10 weeks has been pushed from some of the clubs and putting TFF into pressure.

It is known that Turkish Super League clubs has been showing strong protest towards referees for long years, and in fact been one of the main reasons of the thing which they complaining as such actions has provided strong pressure to those referees which affected negatively. This by itself describes why generally referees provided better performance at international tournaments rather then domestic. With highly experienced referees which included worldwide praised Cuneyt Cakir such decision shows this operation been involved from upper bodies. Argument that reason is for letting younger referees to get experience and opportunities doesnt also sound very realistic.

TFF and Cental Referee Committee needs to make statement regarding this decision as soon as possible for at least to provide some limited understanding of issue.
