What happened in Turkish football today? 13/02/2019

Fenerbahce has got advantage against Zenit but 2nd leg will be more difficult.

Fenerbahce has got an important win against Zenit during Europa League 2nd round 1st leg game thanks to the goal scored by Islam Slimani who has scored his 1st goal for 2019 and this goal could become key for side to get through this tie.

It needs to be noted that even through Zenit has provided poor and disorganised football in suprising manner, at same time Fenerbahce has provided quite opposite with controlling full field and especially taking defensive game with making sure that team will not be able to create dangerous chances with Dzyuba. The only difficult chance has been penalty which was created by Mehmet Topal but Harun Tekin has provided an important save which didnt only save game but also whole tie quite possibly. Stating that, 2nd leg would be still difficult for Fenerbahce as Zenit could be providing much more attacking game at its home ground with help of its fans and cold weather. In fact, Zenit does provide much more effective game at home rather than away during this season. Hence, it would been better if Fenerbahce did manage to find 2nd goal yesterday. Right now, the best option is for Fenerbahce to find an away goal in Petersburg and provide similar organisation with its defence game.

Still, Fenerbahce without doubt has provided a positive view with its performance against Zenit and does show that it can get to last 16 but it needs to be careful in 2nd leg for sure especially defensively.

Galatasaray needs to show confident and brave football against Benfica.

Galatasaray which has set pretty high aims in all competitions it is still competing at, would start its Europa League campaign after Champions League playing against Benfica at the tie which Benfica does have some more advantage.

It needs to be stated that Benfica is providing very good football during 2019, with providing pretty strong attacking games and winning its last games with comfortable scores, including last week game 10:0. Still, Galatasaray would be expected to use its advantage at home ground as it does show some good performance and has shown good games against Trabzonspor in the league but as Fatih Terim has stated himself after that game Benfica game would be much more difficult. It needs to be noted also, with followers of Turkish football, that Benfica is much stronger than when it has met with Fenerbahce during qualifiers for Champions League. Key for Galatasaray is without doubt would be showing pretty aggresive game with aiming to prevent their opponents to create many chances and on other hand going forward in confident manner. Even through it is hard tie for Galatasaray, it still can get through but it needs to show strong and confident football to achieve that.

As always, it is important for Galatasaray to win game without conceding goal to have calmer 2nd leg game and go there with high hopes for last 16.

Yusuf Namoglu will resign from Central Referee Committee CEO position.

Central Referee Committee CEO Yusuf Namoglu has announced that he would be resigning his post after recieving high amount of criticism towards his work and general referee issues which has been taken during recent game of the weeks.

As it is known, and despite of introduction of VAR system which was aiming to reduce criticism towards referees, it has been risen a lot and high amount of clubs administrator has been calling for resignation of the Yusuf Namoglu. During his statement which he has provided for resignation he still states that he has done in all fairness and not taking sides when appointing referees for games but due of high criticism and high amount of mistakes done by referees, it would be right for him to resign. It is also reported that 8 members of Central Referee Committee has also called for resignation after Yusuf Namoglu making it clear that their will not stay if Namoglu would be leaving. Of course, it is questionable if this would solve referee issues, which exists, as it does look its been systematic issue rather than due of specific person and new name which would be appointed at short period of time, would have lots of work to solve this issue and regain trust of committee.

Media coverage and pressure from club CEO has forced Yusuf Namoglu to ask for resignation but it doesnt look like this action would by alone gain trust towards them, and this  committee need to work on this issue in near future.
