What happened in Turkish football today? 12/12/2023

Galatasaray will continue its European journey at Europa League as it shown passive game

Galatasaray has lost to Copenhagen with 1:0 scoreline as game has been played at pretty low tempo and Istanbul giants surprising didnt provide fighting spirit which it has shown on previous games and hence has been qualified to Europa League last 32 as Manchester United lost to Bayern Munich.

Galatasaray did travel to Copenhagen with only focus to get win for getting to knockout stages of the Champions League but it needs to be mentioned that despite of being side who did possess ball and also give sense that it would get some chances, didnt raise tempo of the game which it was expected to do so. It is true that Copenhagen who compare to opponents only needed draw did show good compact defensive game and did look pretty organised, but Galatasaray with having lots of creative and effective players could have provided much pressure to Copenhagen goal. In fact, suprising factor was that Galatasaray had best period of performance as scoreline has been 1:0 to Copenhagen and as game entered to 4 minutes of additional time and taking account that it did only need win it was interesting to see that side has shown reaction so late.

Even through it could be argued that Copenhagen didnt provide good and effective performance with only scoring goal and having good opportunity in start of the game, it did play as it should have as draw would been enough for them to get to next round and it did just in good manner without giving much chance to Galatasaray.

Galatasaray were expecting to show an attacking game and give all fight to get win but it could be argued that it has managed that and in all honesty didnt much deserve to get to knockout stage with today performance.

Football environment in recent years has brought unwanted event yesterday.

Actions of ex-Ankaragucu CEO Faruk Koca towards referee Halil Umut Meler following Super League 15th week between Ankaragucu and Rizespor didnt only provide shocking reaction in whole Turkey but also world as such actions couldnt be accepted at any circumstances.

It needs to be mentioned that hatred towards referees in Turkey during past years which especially been rose during this season has been reached into such level and it was expected that some unwanted events would be happening in this season but not in the sense of CEO of club attacking referee of the game with not only punching but also later kicking him when he felt down. Without doubt every single player, coach, supporters and administrator would be after fair referee performance and wouldnt like to lose points due of this mistakes, but point this is being game and  not end of the world has been forgotten by some people who involved in football world. After this event it would be expected that football clubs would come into senses and act more responsibly but sadly old habits tend to return.

Turkish football needs to go through big revision and Koca must get maximum amount of punishment and so  in fact should Ankaragucu, and time would show if that would take place.

Referees will boycot until safety for them will be secured.

With referees in understandably and in rightfully manner boycotting this week game in Turkey, TFF has been led to pospone all of the league for indifinite period until issue is solved.

Turkish referees at Super League did feel uncomfortable even prior to this incident for long time. In fact, referees looked to be more serious in domestic games rather then in European games, even through it would be expected to be opposte. With much more pressure towards referee coming from Turkey, referees without doubt feel uneasy when making some decisions and has been bombarded. As Turkish referee, Mete Kalkavan has stated while visiting Halil Umut Meler in hospital that they have been staying quiet for respect of job and not been weakness as seen by others. Referees right now are demanding some crucial decisions to be made for they safety during games, and also in fact out of field, for them to continue or otherwise they wouldnt come out to games.

It was known that flame of patience was arleady burning among referees and this incident has been point when they couldnt take it anymore.
