What happened in Turkish football in 2021? 31/12/2021

 

Besiktas had good start of 2021 but not so good in 2022.

Taking out how mixed most of the clubs has competed during whole 2021, it is hard to name side of the year but since Besiktas did win Super League title of 2020-21 season they do stand out.

Without doubt, we are currently seeing two different Besiktas when looking how side performed in the end of the previous season and its performance so far this season. Besiktas without doubt did look to be side to beaten during previous season and even through it did make some loss of points which could cost them points, it still managed to stay focussed. However, it needs to be mentioned that side did have some unwanted results since start of current season losing lots of points and providing poor game which led for resignation of Sergen Yalcin who didnt find solution to such performance.

With Besiktas currently looking for new coach it would hope that its whole 2022 would be similar to start of previous year.

Trabzonspor had mix of year but opposite to Besiktas.

Trabzonspor to some extend is being opposite to Besiktas as during 2nd half of previous season it didnt provide much strong game despite of not losing but right now there are having 7 point advantage in league.

Without doubt, with Abdullah Avci joining side in winter did provide needed push forward to Trabzonspor as it became strong competitive team providing confident attacking game and even winning games which their didnt provide much performance. With poor performance of its main rivals and 7 point difference with 2nd placed Konyaspor means that side would be getting closer for title. 

Everything to some extend depends how side would be competing in rest of the season as losing title would be only their simple mistakes.

Galatasaray had mixed season but overall it could be satisfied.

Galatasaray did provide some performance when looking overall as it did lose title with 2 goals and does have good performance right now at Europa League.

Despite of having very poor game in the Super League during this season, Galatasaray did have good ending of previous season and also currently not losing game at Europa League even through its been poor performance at league getting further and further from title aims. Therefore, one of the main focusses should be to find balance of top game at Europa League to Super League in 2022 if it doesnt want to have much issues. Galatasaray hence did have also mixed season but when looked overall it could be noted to have good one still.

Galatasaray very likely would make rest of the season Europa League to be priority which could have negative impact to domestic league.

Hutchinson scores last goal in Turkish football for 2021.

Atiba Hutchinson during Turkish Cup 5th round game between Besiktas and Altay has marked to be last competitive goal in 2021 at Turkish football, as Istanbul side went through last 16.

This game without doubt did get most amount attention in this stage of the tournament as it been played between sides which are competing at Super League and hence it did led for both sides to provide strong competitive game. With Besiktas also losing on previous league to Altay, among good performance of the side during recent weeks did led them to provide strong game. Besiktas to some extend did show calm game as it did focus to get win without providing too much pressure as there is possibilit for side to save its unsuccessful season with Turkish Cup which could provide them some extra motivation and they just did that in this game.

Altay also provided some good attacking game with looking for opportunities for 90 minutes and focussed into defence but couldnt prevent Hutchinson scoring only goal.

Besiktas continues its good performance with Onder Karaveli and now would be focussed into Turkish Cup which could be only hope for rest of the season.

Fenerbahce ends 2021 with win.

Fenerbahce gets to last 16 stage in the Turkish Cup after beating Afyonspor at 1st extra time despite of having some difficult for most amount of time.

Fenerbahce did have issues with getting enough control of the game providing very low tempo and with Afyonspor being on level much lower it did lead to pretty boring ineffective game from both sides with Fenerbahce having issues to get into much dangerous opportunity until extra-time where it did get opportunity from penalty from Enner Valencia after which Afyonspor lost all motivation and made things easier for Fenerbahce. 

This win at least did provide some motivation for rest of the season for Fenerbahce who had some poor performances this season.

Basaksehirspor signs Emre Colak for 1.5 years

Basaksehirspor got first transfer during mid-season transfer window as it signed Emre Colak for 1.5 years.

Emre Colak contract has been terminated contract with Hatayspor earlier this year due of his open support to Galatasaray but without doubt he is playing good player which could provide some strength to each Super League side so therefore Basaksehirspor would be seeing this purchase to be good one and crucial one for their success in upcoming seasons. It would be also key to show everyone once again that is quality player.

This has also been first signing from Emre Belozoglu but it is expected for Basaksehirspor to make more signings during this window.

 Fenerbahce went through with passive game.

Fenerbahce has won during Turkish Cup 5th round game against Afyonspor with 2:0 scoreline thanks from goals scored during 1st extra time.

Fenerbahce it needs to be mentioned didnt provide very good performance with being pretty slow tempo coming out with low tempo and not being very effective, issues which been present since Vitor Pereira contract has been terminated.It needs to be mentioned that most willing player at Fenerbahce has been Enner Valencia looking for opportunities and did score at penalties but did lack in general with providing last shot on goal which also affected into outcome of the game. Galatasaray got unexpected relegation from Denizlispor.

Denizlispor has marked so far biggest surprising outcome in the Turkish Cup during this season as it managed to beat Galatasaray through penalties with 6:5 scoreline after 120 minutes game has ended with 3:3 scoreline.

It needs to state that even through Galatasaray has been eliminated from 1st league side and should been getting through in much confident manner, it did provide strong fighting spirit with catching up its opponent twice with getting behind twice and get leadership but did got own goal from Nelsson on extra-time which to some extend did affect final outcome. To some extend, there were expectations for Galatasaray to provide much more aggressive game but in all fairness Denizlispor did come for win and did provide some serious issue to their defence for 90 minutes with getting crucial goals.

Denizlispor without doubt did provide strong brave game against Galatasaray with providing confident football and using weaknesses of its opponent which been present in recent weeks.

Fenerbahce got important win against Yeni Malatyaspor for morale.

Fenerbahce wins Yeni Malatyaspor with 2:0 scoreline but still didnt provide top level game as game been played at low tempo with opponent providing passive uncreative game.

Even through Fenerbahce did win its 1st game during last 3 games without conceding goal, this result should not be misleading as Fenerbahce did provide pretty low tempo and shouldnt find even more goals with taking account how relaxed and calm did they play on this day as their did in recent games. Therefore, main positive effect of this result has been to provide morale for start of the 2nd half but side still needs to work on with improving performance, willingness and more importantly morale in this short mid-season break. Its been important meanwhile for Dimitris Pelkas to find goal on 2nd half after entering to field and this could provide some morale and hope for upcoming games.

Yeni Malatyaspor did provide pretty poor ineffective game without providing too much pressure to Fenerbahce and does show why it is being on bottom of the standings.

Trabzonspor been bigger winner from draw against Basaksehirspor.

Both Trabzonspor and Basaksehirspor did provide pretty exciting and strong game as been promised prior to game, making it clear why both sides are being in strong form right now.

Trabzonspor kept confident leadership with goalless draw against Basaksehirspor.

Even through there has been high expectations for Super League 19th week game between Trabzonspor and Basaksehirspor has ended with 0:0 scoreline.

With this result, winner has been without doubt Trabzonspor as it kept its leadership in the table with point difference of its opponents and did get important 1 point from another side which is providing good performance and been expected to provide some difficult moments towards them during 90 minutes. In fact, it was known that number of scouts of top clubs were present viewing him and hence this could be reason with him getting extra motivation. Stating that Galatasaray did look to be very willing to win this game with controlling game not letting Antalyaspor not much with opportunities during game.

Even through Besiktas is being currently pretty far from title race, it does provide best performance among top 3 clubs which been unexpectedly due of caretaker coach Onder Karaveli taking place of Sergen Yalcin and to some extend sending strong message to rest of the side showing that he has intention to stay at the club taking role. Fenerbahce players minds were not on game

Fenerbahce continues showing poor results after sacking Vitor Pereira with this time it failing to beat Fatih Karagumruk despite of playing with 9-to-11 for 60 minutes.

It needs to be mentioned that when looking at the game in overall there was big decline of tempo which been shown by side following Vitor Pereira as it looked like players were not on field. It is true that even with 11-on-11, Fenerbahce did possess ball with high amount of passes but it is useless if there is hardly any shots on goal, let alone effective ones. Fenerbahce looked to be mentally in other places, and there would be without doubt lots of things to do for new head coach when he joins to side probably during midseason break. This performance from side is not acceptable at all.

Manuel Fernandes has terminated contract with Kayserispor

Kayserispor player Manuel Fernandes has terminated contract with his club Kayserispor as there were known to be disagreements between sides.

Fenerbahce looked to be lacking motivation against Fatih Karagumruk despite having 2 extra men on 2nd half.

Fenerbahce has failed to beat Fatih Karagumruk even when having 2 extra men on field for more than 1 half as it lost tempo which been pleasant with Vitor Pereira.

1st game from Fenerbahce since terminating contract Vitor Pereira didnt go as planned did play in mediocre tempo and with this tempo being suitable for Fatih Karagumruk the game has felt to be like friendly game with some long time passing but not much being done at front from Fenerbahce apart of last minutes of the game when it did look to find winning goal but even then it did look to be providing pretty simple dissapointing style of game. In fact, to some extend being in the friendly mode game, conceded goal did come in such position as it did such position due of too much relaxation while winning goal did come from penalty. Therefore, Fenerbahce did provide pretty dissapointing game without providing too much pressure to Fatih Karagumruk.

Trabzonspor continues winning at the Super League and gets closer to its title aims as it got from behind of good performing Altay without providing necesarilly good performance.

Trabzonspor didnt provide very good game against Altay, especially during 1st half as it did have trouble into getting full control of the game. In fact, during that period its been Altay which showed an attacking game as Ugurcan Cakir had incredible saves as Cebrayil Karayel shot could be hardly saved from any goalkeeper in the world. Why Cakir has been main reason for keeping side in the game, its been Cornelius who did find goals and did bring win in the game where as been noted it didnt provide very strong confident performance for 90 minutes. Trabzonspor compare to other sides continues winning even when its not providing top game and this been most important reason for getting so much points.

Trabzonspor continues to dominate league and could even win title in middle of spring it continues like this. 

Galatasaray lacks motivation in the league.

Galatasaray continues with showing ineffective performance in the league as it lost to Adana Demirspor thanks to its player Yunus Akgun who scored great 2 goals.

Galatasaray does have issues with showing top level performance in the Super League as it didnt win for 7 games and currently being 21 points from league leaders. Cornelius led side to get important win.

Trabzonspor got another win with getting from behind against Altay thanks to two goals from Cornelius as side is getting closer with its aim to win title even if only in December.

Fenerbahce is being currently under big pressure.

Both Fenerbahce and Besiktas got even further from title hopes as point difference with Trabzonspor is getting bigger and bigger while Fenerbahce is especially being under pressure despite of being closer to leaders.

Following 2:2 draw against Besiktas, but even more providing less effective game compare to opponent as to some extend their did gain 1 points continues providing pressure towards head coach Vitor Pereira and CEO Ali Koc as side didnt dominate game letting opponent to do control of the game. Fenerbahce supporters in addition has provided strong protest calling Koc to resign, this is being 1st time for him to recieve such critisicm from supporters. With being 14 points behind leaders side is showing ineffective game and does urgently need to find solutions to this issue.

Things are not going as planned for Fenerbahce and Vitor Pereira need to find solutions for this during next 2 games if he wants at club.

Besiktas were slightly better on field.

Both sides hopes for title is getting slimmer from derby draw

Result of derby game of sides which been far from fight for top positions even more difficult as point difference of Fenerbahce has rised to 14 points while for Besiktas is being 17 points following 2:2 scoreline.

Despite of being at home and coming to game without head coach, Besiktas did provide much better organised game which did look like it wanted to win. Besiktas did looked to be more confident with creating some opportunities and showed some strong character with getting back into game while getting twice thanks to the goals from Josef de Souza who used his opportunities very effective with using an opportunity with scoring from Fenerbahce some small mistakes. Hence, Okan Karaveli during both games so far didnt lose with his side showing strong character in both games including derby game.

It would be unfair to state that Fenerbahce didnt provide full focus and provide confident game, but when looking how Besiktas played it didnt provide such level game. 2 goals which were scored did come from questionable penalty decision while 2nd goal did come from 2nd goal. What was more worrying and being observed on previous games that side did show more slower defensive game towards end of the game which been worrying when side needs to win game. Therefore, such performance is not being acceptable without doubt and needs to be changed.

As we getting closer to mid-season point, both sides point difference is getting bigger and gets to point when it would not be closed.

Trabzonspor got into winning ways.

Trabzonspor got into winning ways after losing on previous week against Antalyaspor, with showing its intention from beginning against Hatayspor providing strong pressure to them from start.

Trabzonspor did dominated during 1st half with getting into high number opportunities, getting possession and Hatayspor not having single shot into goal. Therefore, it shouldnt be seen to be big surprise for it to end with 2:0 scoreline as Trabzonspor could have scored much more goals during that period. It did reduce tempo of the game bit during 2nd half with letting Hatayspor to get into some chances but it still didnt concede goal showing its been at game in control and without doubt did get crucial important win providing pressure to lower sides.

Trabzonspor got win with good attacking game and continues to be strongest candidate for title.

Galatasaray needs to focus more into its own performance then referees.

Galatasaray, possibly rightly, provides strong criticism with Basaksehirspor game referee Zorbay Kucuk but it does provide poor performance in league for weeks.

Galatasaray focus to much into referees does provide some issues for them during games as it continues to be losing points and getting further and further from league leaders Trabzonspor so it would be more productive to provide focus into own performance rather then continuing providing pressure to referees. Galatasaray didnt show strong attacking game without providing too much pressure to Basaksehirspor with opponent deserving win more and this area which side needs to focus.

Trabzonspor got great win against Hatayspor.

Trabzonspor got 2:0 win against tough opponents Hatayspor with with showing strong attacking performance during 1st half without letting opponent to get any positions.

Trabzonspor following loss of 3 points on previous week, did start game in very stronger manner with creating opportunities and preventing Hatayspor to create opportunities on their part as it was only question of time when goal would be coming as it did with great goal from Djaniny on 25th minute. Following, that position Trabzonspor did found 2nd goal which allowed to reduce tempo of 2nd half which led for Hatayspor to provide much more better 2nd half but it did come to some extend with Trabzonspor. However, it needs to be noted that this relaxation could lead for Hatayspor which could lead to unwanted pressure to Trabzonspor. Still, Trabzonspor did get confident result with good performance after losing on previous week.

Hatayspor did start game pretty poorly withotu providing any danger and only started showing some danger to opponent goal on 2nd half but its been too late.

Trabzonspor has shown very good reaction following loss on previous week and regained its confidence and focus to title once again. 

Galatasaray continues losing points at Super League

Galatasaray continues losing points at the Super League as it has drawn against Basaksehirspor as during this time it did save this point thanks to the last minutes goal from Mustafa Muhammed.

It needs to be stated that Galatasaray did provide pretty active game with high number of possession and some opportunities for 90 minutes but it did have issues to convert them which could be partly due of issues between players of teamwork and not providing enough pressure with shot. Therefore, Galatasaray did have issue to provide strong pressure into opponents while Basaksehirspor looked to be more with its opponents and did look like side which did to be closer for win and to some extend with providing such performance it could be noted that its been side which did lose 3 points in the end of the game. Meanwhile, Galatasaray continues to be losing points without Fatih Terim being into head coach post and hence its need to find solutions to this for upcoming 2 games.

Basaksehirspor has been side which did look for positions during 90 minutes with providing patient game preventing to some extend Galatasaray and will be dissapointed to draw at 88 minutes.

Derby game between Fenerbahce and Besiktas would be played between both sides in condition where result doesnt have any direct impact to top of the standings race but both need to win to keep its chances for title arrive.

Volkan Demirel been appointed as Fatih Karagumruk head coach for 2.5 years

Fatih Karagumruk has appointed Volkan Demirel as club's head coach as it would be his head coach debut and it would be with side which does have high aims.

 Rezan Epozdemir resigns as Galatasaray administrator.

Galatasaray administrator Rezan Epozdemir has announced his resignation from his post due of strong misunderstandings with club CEO Burak Elmas.

Even through Burak Elmas statements towards TFF has been seen to be too harsh by Turkish media and this blog, literally starting war, it is reported that some members in the club dont see Elmas being too harsh and direct towards TFF. It is reported hence that one of the main reasons for this resignation hence been such action while it is reported that there is unhappiness from Epozdemir and other members of decision to get out from broadcasting pool and recent action to be become friendship conneciton with Fenerbahce. 

It is reported that Rezan Epozdemir will have press conference on 17th December where he would make it clear why he resigned.

Fenerbahce interested to appoint Kenan Kocak as head coach.

Fenerbahce considers to terminate contract with its head coach Vitor Pereira if clubs get undesired result during derby game against Besiktas, with Kenan Kocak being strong candidate.

Currently being at Turkish National Team assistant coach, Kenan Kocak has been as suitable candidate for Fenerbahce due of some good works he has done with Kuntz in such short period of time and also being Turkish coach would reduce payments to foreign coaches who will likely not come for good price. Kocak does have good experience and understanding of Turkish football so among available coaches Kocak does look to be good candidate for side.

As been noted, Fenerbahce having negotiations with Kocak would be connected with Besiktas result but it is clear that Pereira days are being numbered.

Galatasaray continues providing pressure to TFF.

Galatasaray CEO Burak Elmas has once again made statements with criticising referee decisions which took place in recent weeks to them and at Super League other games generally.

Criticism towards referee performance during this season seems to be ongoing issue as all clubs continue to criticise both referee decisions and systematic issue which are present with TFF and Central Referee Committee. Therefore, this criticisms which been mentioned by Burak Elmas have been without doubt on-going issues at the Turkish football. In addition, Burak Elmas has once again called for TFF current administration to which TFF CEO Nihat Ozdemir early provided some discomfort for such statements but it does look like Elmas focusses into continuing providing such pressure to this administration and it would be interesting to see how TFF would respond.

Issues between both TFF and Galatasaray looks to be continuing to be taking place and it would be interesting how their would develop.

Kerim Altiay resigns as TFF administrator.

Meanwhile, following statements which been done by Burak Elmas, TFF representative committee member Kerim Altiay has resigned from his post.

Even through its not known if this resignation is due of statements from Burak Elmas, the timing does rise some questions if there is in fact issues at the TFF in recent period of time and if this resignation has direct impact from Burak Elmas and if some other resignation would be taking place in upcoming days. Without doubt, it would be helpful if TFF would announce reason for this resignation in short period of time. 

Timing as been noted of this resignation is being pretty interesting and it would be followed if there would be similar developments in upcoming days.

Besiktas has made deal with Bruno Pinheiro for 2+1 years

Besiktas are reported to make deal with Estoril head coach Bruno Pinheiro for 2+1 years for 900,000 euro and would be joining side during mid-season transfer period.

Since Pinheiro is having on-going contract with Estoril, Besiktas lawyers are currently working into ways how to terminate contract with suitable deal for both sides as Pinheiro showed green light with working at Besiktas and also waiting for Besiktas to solve contract with his club. Pinheiro is been known to be number one candidate right now as he does suit into  category of being young coach who is hungry for success as he is being 45-year old and does have young technical staff members. Fenerbahce continues to show ineffective game.

Fenerbahce has lost very good opportunity of getting closer to Trabzonspor with 9 points as it lost to Gaziantep at the game which did come from simple mistakes from defenders.

It needs to be noted that Fenerbahce, especially attackers didnt provide necessarily poor game which could be seen from amount of opportunities and scoring 2 goals despite of Gaziantep providing organised defensive game. However, all conceded goals did come from very simple mistakes which would not be accepted at Super League and organised opponent like Gaziantep did use this opportunity with full effect scoring twice with Figuiredo and penalty goal coming from Maxim. This result still shows that Fenerbahce are not in level of fighting for title and it needs to find solutions to this as soon as possible.

Fenerbahce doesnt look to be in good condition before derby game against Besiktas but it could be motivated to that game differently.

Yatabare and Fajr might not been aware how serious Muslera been injured.

Galatasaray continues losing crucial points when returning from successful game at Europa League with providing poor game at Super League.

It needs to be mentioned that whole conversation has been discussed about goal which did come from Sivasspor and it if was ethical as Fernando Muslera being lying around on the group being injured while Yatabare and Fajr has provided position for themselves ending with goal. Even through there was time and Yatabare did look around there is possibility in our view that both players due of being focussed into position and eye sight were not aware of Muslera condition. Trabzonspor player Anthony Nwakaeme recovery from injury has become as it might be taking for some time which would league leaders might have some issues at attack.

Fenerbahce lost due of simple mistakes at defence.

Fenerbahce has lost to Gaziantep with 3:2 scoreline and did lose opportunity to get closer to the league leaders to 9 points due of simple defence mistakes.

It needs to be noted that Fenerbahce when looking entirely didnt provide very poor game as it looked for opportunities and willingness but due of 3 simple mistakes at the defence it conceded 2 goals while 3rd position ended up with penalty. One of the most dissappointing part from Fenerbahce perspective has been for sure providing simple mistakes from Gustavo and Kim Min Jae which usually expected due of strong performance and this to some extend could be due of lack of concentration. When coming to attackers, Fenerbahce did provide good wiling game but still it couldnt get more then 2 goals as Gaziantep show good defence during whole game but without doubt main reason for loss been mistakes of defenders.

Stating that, Gaziantep did stay focus for 90 minutes with using effectively mistakes from Fenerbahce and despite of conceding 2 goals, they did provide some strong organised defensive game.

Without doubt, Fenerbahce would need to focus for such simple defensive mistakes of the side especially those mistakes cant be done against Besiktas.

Galatasaray continues losing points at Super League.

Galatasaray continues getting some unwanted results at the domestic league as it lost to Sivasspor with 1:0 scoreline after conceding goal from Fajr on 81st minute.

Galatasaray continues showing two different performances between Europa League and Super League especially during returns as it didnt provide similar tempo game which it shown against Lazio during midweek which could be both due of concentration and focus to the game. It needs to noted that Galatasaray still created some positions with Feghouli and Diagne and hence didnt look specifically passive in attack but those attacks didnt look to be very effective. Therefore, this lack of providing fast tempo game against side did provide some difficulties for Galatasaray to find winning goal especially when playing against such organisation.

Sivasspor meanwhile did provide its strong performance as it provided strong rise of its performance in recent weeks and did look specifically organised which led them to get such crucial win.

Besiktas got confidence boost following win against Kayserispor

Besiktas has started its new chapter following resignation of Sergen Yalcin with win against Kayserispor and providing strong willingness during last 20 minutes of the game.

It could be argued if Besiktas did provide necessarily very good performance for 90 minutes but compare to recent games it did provide much more focus, fighting spirit and willingness t to win game which been very important especially with getting twice behind and generally having lack of self-belief which did come from previous game. Without doubt, such performance would be providing confidence boost prior to Fenerbahce derby game during next week while for Onder Karaveli been memorable night as he got great win for game where he is likely would be caretaker coach only for one game.

Besiktas has managed to get crucial win against Kayserispor with 4:2 scoreline while getting behind twice and did show strong character and fighting spirit during 1st game after Sergen Yalcin has left side.

There has been some strong interest how would respond following Sergen Yalcin from resignation and it needs to be mentioned that it did provide high tempo reaction while getting behind as Mishy Batshuayi without doubt provided his best game since he joined with scoring 2 great goals. One of the crucial factors during this game without doubt been affected due of both sides playing for win which did lead to high tempo open game but due of quality of sides, Besiktas did use but it needs to be noted that side especially during 2nd half did provide much more willingness during 2nd half and hence did get deserved win.

Kayserispor also provided great game with showing strong attacking game which did lead them to get ahead during game and overall did show positive game which would provide positive impact for upcoming games.

Trabzonspor got its first loss during this season

Trabzonspor has lost its 1st game during this season with getting unexpected loss from Antalyaspor as result did come from own goal from Dorukhan Tokoz as this has turned out game which Trabzonspor has struggled most.
