What happened in Turkish football today? 25/05/2023

Basaksehirspor gets to the Turkish Cup final after beating Ankaragucu on extra-time

Basaksehirspor has got ticket to the Turkish Cup final game as it has beaten Ankaragucu at extra-time thanks to the goal from Keny on 109th minute and also red card from Ninad Mujakic as Istanbul side wins tie with 3:2 aggregate scoreline and would meet Fenerbahce in Izmir on 11th June.

It needs to be emntioned that Basaksehirspor didnt specifically start game well as it did concede from Ali Sowe as early as 11th minute but this conceded goal has been waking up call as Basaksehirspor did manage to balance game and also got some very good chances with providing pretty good pressure to Ankaragucu. However, after finding goal and even through it has been side which did control game, it did show some relaxation and reduced tempo without providing too much effort into finding 2nd goal and hence get 2 goal advantage at the tie. At providing such performance, Ankaragucu did show an attacking towards end of the 90 minutes and did find a goal. It needs to be stated that Ninad Mujakic red card on 1st half which did come pretty in needless manner which led for Basaksehirspor to get game into its own control and did find a winning goal from Keny with 10 minutes until end of extra time and with providing controllable game, it managed to win tie and get to the final of the competition.

Coming to the Ankaragucu, it needs to be mentioned that main reason for side not to get into final game has been without doubt Ninad Mujakic who has shown needless protest when throw-in wasnt allowed due of opponent substituting player during 1st extra-time and after showing protest clapping which is unacceptable behaviour from professional player in such important game and stage of it. When looking in overall, it could be noted that even through compare to Basaksehirspor it did look to be showing passive game, it has been looked pretty patient and organised and such mentality could lead to penalty kicks if extra-time continued to be played 11-on-11. Still, it could be noted that team did show good and confident performance and did provide some issues to Basaksehirspor in this tie especially during 2nd leg.

Basaksehirspor hence gets to the Turkish Cup final where it would be meeting with Fenerbahce on 11th June at Izmir at the tie which been difficult but has been well-deserved to get through.

Fenerbahce reaches to Turkish Cup with confident win against Sivasspor.

Fenerbahce has managed to reach to the Turkish Cup final where it would be meeting with Basaksehirspor after getting pretty confident win against Sivasspor with 3:0 scoreline especially with dominating 2nd half of the game.

It could be mentioned that Fenerbahce did have some issues during 1st half where it did dominate possession but didnt get much opportunities towards goal due of good defensive game of Sivasspor and in fact did allow its opponent to create some chances. However, things has been changed entirely during 2nd half as Fenerbahce has created back-to-back chances and has dominated 2nd half which did happen more or less due of finding goal on 1st minute of 2nd half with great volley from Ferdi Kadioglu as goal did come following post which been hit by Michy Batshuayi. With 2 more coming from Batshuayi and Joshua King later on half, has led team to get an important win. Right now Turkish Cup is on their own hand as they would play against Basaksehirspor on 11th June in Izmir.

Hence, Fenerbahce did show that it wanted this competition with effective game especially 2nd half and got into final at deserved manner.

Tiredness of season from Sivasspor has affected performance of 2nd half.

On other hand, Sivasspor has shown signs of tiredness and misorganisation an area which been actively mentioned and discussed with its head coach Riza Calimbay for long time.

It needs to be mentioned that when excluding Super League performance Sivasspor did have good season as it did get top spot at Conference League in pretty tough group for them and did reach to the semi-final of Turkish Cup so calling this season as failure would be doing injustice to whole team. In fact, it did provide some organised game during 1st half and did create some good chances during end of 1st half but with conceding goal early on 2nd half did lead them to lose morale, concentration and signs of season tiredness did start showing its signs.

Sivasspor did show hence some good performance at Turkish Cup and reaching to semi-final should be seen as good success even through it didnt manage to defend its title.
